With the help of a new IDC grant, Uintah County is moving forward with the plan to create the foundation for a regional indigent defense system in the 8th Judicial District. The first step is to hire a managing public defender. The MPD will hire and oversee the attorneys in a managed assigned counsel system. These attorneys will provide representation in the District, Juvenile, and Justice Courts of the 8th District Counties. The MPD, with the help of a legal assistant and case management system, will ensure the independence of the public defenders while providing the appropriate oversight and accountability to ensure constitutional compliance, appropriate workloads, and adequate funding.
